Dr. Toft joined the OBGYN West team in 2009 following completion of her residency program at the University of Michigan. She is originally from the area—growing up in the small town of Nicollet, Minnesota—which helped her develop a great Midwestern work ethic. She moved back to Eden Prairie to raise her family close to family and friends.
“We had an extensive minimally invasive surgery program at the University of Michigan,” explains Dr. Toft. “I’ve been performing advanced laparoscopic surgery since I was an intern. That’s part of the reason I wanted to work with OBGYN West. I feel very comfortable with my experience in these new minimally invasive procedures, including the da Vinci® surgical system, and I’m happy to provide that option for my patients.”
Dr. Toft has always been a quick study and more than a little ahead of the curve. While in high school, she spent her senior year taking freshman college courses just because she got “kind of bored.” In addition to a double load of school work and a part-time job decorating cakes at her father’s bakery, she also was involved in volleyball, dance line, choir, and played saxophone, flute, and piccolo in the high school band. “I’ve always had a lot of inner drive,” she admits. “If I put my mind to something, I was going to do it.”
By age 19, she had already decided she was going to be a doctor—but not before taking a year off after getting her undergraduate degree (at the ripe old age of 20) to work in group homes with autistic and severely mentally handicapped people. And to get married to her college sweetheart, Eric.
Then, it was off to the University of Minnesota, where she soon learned OBGYN was the perfect specialty for her. “The days were long, but I loved every minute of it,” Dr. Toft confesses of her Obstetrics and Gynecology rotation. “I liked taking care of women, especially through labor and delivery. But then I got to see them back for their annual exam, and you can follow them over time. I really like that continuity of care and getting to follow someone through major life events.”
When it came time to find that first job, OBGYN West was Dr. Toft’s first choice. Not only did she like the other doctors she met (“they seemed very straightforward, easy to talk to, and very down to earth,” she confides), but she admired their “with you every step of the way” approach.
“I’m interested in having long-term relationships with my patients. I want to take them through their pregnancies, help them transition into menopause. I’m a very positive person, but I always give the facts. So if a patient comes to me, they’ll know all their options. And they’ll know I’ll help them make good decisions.”
In addition to her duties at OBGYN West, Dr. Toft also serves as the Medical Director for Premier Ob/Gyn of Minnesota. Dr. Toft oversees quality improvement initiatives for five (5) independent Ob/Gyn practices in the Twin Cities. Driving toward the triple AIM – High Quality and Cost Effective Healthcare with excellent Patient Experiences.
Dr. Toft likes to participate in 5K and 10K races in the area and enjoys spending time outdoors fishing, jet skiing, and bike riding. She and her husband, Eric, have three children: Jacob, Abigail and Clara.
